Dolphins are truly remarkable creatures. They possess exceptional social skills, intelligence, agility, and playfulness, while also sharing many emotional traits with humans. The diversity among dolphin species is impressive, each one boasting its own distinct personality and attributes.

How Many Dolphin Species Exist?

At present, there are 42 known species of dolphins, categorized into five families. The oceanic dolphin family is by far the largest, with 38 species, while the remaining four families consist of river dolphins. However, the classification of these species is ongoing, as new research and discoveries continue to emerge. It is possible that some dolphin species may be split into multiple species or subspecies as more data becomes available.
The names of dolphins can be a bit perplexing. There are eight species that have the word ‘whale’ in their names, such as pilot whales, killer whales, false killer whales, and melon-headed whales. Additionally, two species carry both "whale" and "dolphin" in their names: the northern right whale dolphin and the southern right whale dolphin. No wonder there’s confusion among both the public and scientists!

Where Do Dolphins Live?

Dolphins inhabit seas, oceans, and some rivers across the globe. Certain species prefer coastal waters, while others thrive in shallow areas farther from the shore, where patches of shallower waters are found further out at sea.
Orcas, or killer whales, are the only species of dolphin that reside in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Their substantial size provides them with protection against the freezing temperatures of these cold seas. Most dolphins, however, tend to favor tropical and temperate waters, as these regions allow them to maintain their body temperature with greater ease, being warm-blooded mammals.

Can Dolphins Live in Freshwater?

Some river dolphins, like the Amazon River dolphin (also known as the boto) and the Ganges River dolphin, live exclusively in freshwater rivers and lakes far from the ocean, earning them the label of "true river dolphins." There is another category of so-called river dolphins that consists of freshwater populations of marine species. These dolphins, such as the tucuxi (or sotalia), Guiana dolphin, Irrawaddy dolphin, and the finless porpoise, either partially or permanently inhabit freshwater environments.

What Are the Differences Between Dolphins and Porpoises?

Porpoises are generally smaller than dolphins, growing to less than 2.5 meters (8 feet) in length. They also have a stockier build compared to dolphins and feature a small head, a minimal or absent beak, and a small, triangular dorsal fin (except for finless porpoises!). Furthermore, porpoises and dolphins have distinct differences in their teeth. Porpoises possess spade-shaped teeth, while dolphins have conical teeth.
