I have a real love for painting flowers with watercolor. Many people are surprised by how bright, dimensional, and lifelike watercolor florals can appear, and I’m often asked how I achieve that effect.
The answer lies in my personal wet-on-dry technique.
By building up multiple layers, you can create rich textures, vivid colors, and a strong sense of depth in your work—especially when painting flowers.
This method is what helped me earn recognition and awards for my artwork, and it’s the same approach I’ve taught to more than 15,000 students through Nature Studio.
It’s particularly effective for floral subjects.
If you’re just getting started, it’s best to begin with simpler flowers while you learn the process. Once you’re comfortable, you’ll be able to tackle more detailed and realistic blooms with confidence.
Below are five of my favorite beginner-friendly watercolor flower mini lessons. Each one gives you a quick look at how I approach painting that specific flower.
Sunflower
Painting a sunflower is an instant mood booster. Those bold yellow tones are a pleasure to work with, and capturing the textured, fuzzy center is especially rewarding.
In a short tutorial, I walk through the main steps I use to create a sunflower painting.
Rose
Roses are full of depth and elegance, making them a wonderful subject. Because of their layered petals, it’s important to carefully sketch the structure before applying paint.
I demonstrate my overall process for painting a watercolor rose in a quick overview lesson.
Bluebell
Blue-toned flowers have a calming, peaceful quality. Bluebells, with their delicate, drooping shapes, are especially beautiful to paint.
In a brief guide, I show how to capture their subtle shine and three-dimensional form.
African Daisy
Also called Osteospermum, the African daisy is a favorite for watercolor practice.
Its dark, intricate center contrasts beautifully with the striped pink and purple petals, giving you the chance to explore a wide tonal range and create strong depth.
I share how I approach painting this flower step by step in a short lesson.
Hydrangea
As your skills improve, you can move on to more detailed flowers like hydrangeas. These blooms look complex but are easier than they seem.
That’s because each cluster is made up of many small, simple flowers. Once you learn how to paint a few individual shapes, you can repeat the process to build the entire bloom.
In the mini class, I explain how I construct a hydrangea painting from these smaller components.

The Secret to Crafting Flawless and Enduring Mochi
This particular method yields a superior mochi that maintains its soft, supple texture for several days without becoming overly dense or excessively tacky. One of its most remarkable features is its resilience; even after being stored in the freezer, the dough regains its signature fluffiness upon thawing. This recipe is the result of a collaborative evolution, combining traditional family techniques with modern efficiency. While the original inspiration came from a close family friend, the process was refined by using plastic wrap for cleaner handling and a microwave technique that reduces the cooking time from nearly an hour to just four minutes without compromising the quality of the dough.
