Desk Notes

Tokyo Tower is an iconic landmark that has long been associated with the city’s skyline. Standing as the tallest self-supporting steel tower in the world, the striking red-and-white structure was inspired by Paris’ Eiffel Tower and served as Tokyo’s primary broadcasting tower for decades. Although many of its broadcasting functions have now been transferred to the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower remains a beloved symbol of the capital and continues to attract visitors from around the world.
In recent years, Japan has experienced a growing fascination with the Showa period, particularly the decades of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Completed in 1958 during Japan’s postwar economic recovery, Tokyo Tower is one of the most recognizable monuments from that era. The tower has appeared in numerous films and television productions, including the popular movie Always: Sunset on Third Street, helping to reinforce its status as a cultural icon. Visitors can also explore displays featuring historical photographs that document the tower’s construction and evolution over the years.
The tower’s most popular attraction is the Main Observatory, situated 145 meters above ground. This observation deck offers sweeping 360-degree views across Tokyo through its large panoramic windows. Guests can enjoy a café, browse souvenir shops, watch live performances at Club333, and use interactive displays that provide information about the city’s landmarks and changing scenery. Glass floor sections add excitement by allowing visitors to look straight down below. On exceptionally clear days, Mount Fuji can even be seen in the distance.
For those seeking an even more impressive perspective, the Special Observatory is located 250 meters above ground. Access requires an additional ticket, but visitors are rewarded with a quieter atmosphere, fewer crowds, and stunning panoramic views from the circular observation deck.
While some visitors may feel that the upper observation areas offer fewer attractions than expected considering the admission cost, the complex beneath the tower provides plenty of entertainment. Known as FootTown, the multi-level facility contains a variety of attractions, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. The first floor houses the observation deck elevators, a large aquarium, souvenir stores, a convenience store, and dining facilities. The second floor features a lively shopping area with gift shops, restaurants, and a food court.
On the third floor, visitors can explore attractions such as the Guinness World Records Museum Tokyo and the Tokyo Tower Wax Museum. Although the wax museum shows signs of age, it continues to charm many guests. This level also includes a hologram gallery, cafés, and additional retail outlets. The upper floor is home to Nippon Square as well as a small amusement arcade. Tokyo Tower regularly updates its attractions in an effort to offer fresh experiences for returning visitors.
More than just an observation point, Tokyo Tower represents an important part of Tokyo’s identity and history. While there are many modern skyscrapers and observation decks throughout the city, few can match the atmosphere and cultural significance of this famous landmark. For many travelers, a trip to Tokyo would feel incomplete without experiencing Tokyo Tower firsthand.

Puck Battles: Mindset, Technique, and How to Improve

In the high-speed, high-contact world of hockey, controlling the puck is everything. Every second that your team possesses the puck is a second your opponent cannot score.
