Meet the World's Longest Sea-Crossing Bridge

The world’s longest bridge over open water has been completed, creating a direct connection between mainland China and Hong Kong. Stretching 34 miles (55 kilometers), the massive project cost approximately $20 billion and required nine years of construction. It is designed to dramatically shorten journeys between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao, the three major destinations around the Pearl River Delta, reducing travel time from around three hours to just 30 minutes.

Officially called the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the enormous transportation system includes three cable-stayed bridges, an underwater tunnel and four man-made islands. Engineers designed the structure to cope with earthquakes, typhoons and possible collisions with ships. Around 400,000 tons (363,000 metric tons) of steel were incorporated into the project for reinforcement. For comparison, this amount is about 4.5 times the quantity of steel used to construct San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, according to Travel Wire Asia.

Artificial Islands and the Underwater Tunnel

Because parts of the crossing pass through shallow waters, artificial islands were constructed to support the bridge system. Two of these islands serve as the entry and exit points for a 4-mile (6.7-kilometer) underwater tunnel.

The tunnel allows vehicles to pass beneath one of the world’s busiest shipping routes rather than crossing the shipping channel directly. This combination of elevated bridges, artificial islands and an undersea passage enables the transportation link to span the Pearl River Delta while accommodating heavy maritime traffic.

New Restrictions for Private Drivers

Although the bridge eliminates a major transportation obstacle for some travelers, it also introduces new restrictions for others. Hong Kong residents who own private cars cannot simply drive across the bridge whenever they wish. They must obtain special permission to use the crossing or choose a paid shuttle bus instead. Travelers will also still be required to go through immigration procedures when crossing between the territories.

Political and Economic Concerns

The bridge has also attracted political controversy, with some residents and commentators questioning its broader purpose and economic implications. Critics have suggested that the enormous infrastructure project could serve political interests as much as transportation needs.

Some observers have argued that the bridge could effectively move public money toward wealthy Chinese and local business figures whose construction companies were involved in the project. These concerns have contributed to public debate over whether the enormous investment will ultimately provide sufficient benefits for ordinary residents.

Hong Kong’s Relationship with Mainland China

The bridge also carries significance because of the unique political status of the regions it connects. In 1997, Hong Kong, which had previously been under British rule, was transferred to the People’s Republic of China and became a special administrative region. Under the arrangement established at the time, China agreed to maintain a high level of autonomy for Hong Kong’s economic and social systems for 50 years following the handover.

Macao and Its Distinctive Status

Macao followed a similar path two years later. In 1999, the territory, which had been one of the longest-standing Portuguese settlements in Asia, was transferred to Chinese sovereignty. At the time, China promised that Macao’s established way of life would largely remain unchanged for another 50 years.

By physically linking Hong Kong and Macao with mainland China, the bridge therefore represents more than a major engineering achievement. Its long-term consequences could extend into transportation, economics, politics and culture, potentially influencing the relationship between these territories and mainland China for decades to come.

Understanding Bichon Frise Traits and How to Care for Them

The Bichon Frise is a small non-sporting dog breed with long, curly white fur that makes its dark eyes and nose stand out prominently. Many people describe Bichons as fluffy as cotton balls, often comparing them to “living stuffed animals.” These dogs are energetic and people-focused, disliking being left alone for extended periods. One of their favorite places to be is usually curled up in their owner’s lap, enjoying close companionship.
